Counseling Services for Texas Residents
PCT is a theory that leans on the belief that the client is the expert in their own lives, and that when provided with a genuine, non-judgmental environment for the client to explore their own world, the client will inherently be motivated towards positive change and self-actualization.
What does it treat?
Who is most helpful for?
How does it work?
The core conditions for PCT include empathy of the therapist toward the client, congruence in that the therapist acts in a genuine manner, and unconditional positive regard wherein the therapist uses a non-judgmental perspective to listed to the client. Each session will focus on allowing the client to explore their current issues in the safely fostered environment. This will allow the client the opportunity for self-exploration and gaining personal understanding. The therapist provides genuineness and empathy in understanding the client’s individual struggles as the client unravels their story. As the therapist, I allow the client to direct the subject of the conversation, and will summarize and interpret the conversation to help ensure understanding of the client’s experience. This type of therapy relies on the relationship between therapist and client to help the client gain a clear understanding of themselves and the path they want to choose for their future. We can think of it like we are in a car together. You are in the driver’s seat, making the moves, while I am in the passenger seat with a map, showing you the options that lie ahead.
